From raw wool to a finished rug, everything at Black Sheep happens by hand — the same way it did in the 1930s, just with more shades of color to choose from.
Our hand-spun yarn is the heart of every piece we create — the first and most essential step, capturing the rich legacy of our ancestral drop-spindle techniques. We use 100% wool from Churro and Lincoln sheep, combined with the luxurious fibers of Angora and Mohair goats, carefully selected to our highest quality standards.
Through carding and hand-spinning passed down through generations, we shape wool fibers into yarn that carries its own story — the natural variations in thickness and texture give it a distinctive authenticity you won't find in machine-spun wool.
We honor both ancient Zapotec traditions and modern pigment innovation, combining natural and synthetic dyes into a custom palette of over 300 distinct colors — without sacrificing quality or environmental sustainability.
Cochineal, indigo, walnut shells, and wild marigold flowers give us warm, organic "earth tones" tied directly to the land. Synthetic dyes fill in where a design calls for precision — vibrant, consistent color that stands up to light and wear for years.
The loom is set up with a warp of 80% pure wool and 20% nylon, meticulously tensioned to form the foundation of the rug. Using a two-heddle pedal loom, we weave the hand-spun yarn across the warp — creating a reversible "flat weave," where the same pattern is respected on both sides.
Our designs draw from traditional Zapotec patterns as well as original "inter-tribal" creations — geometric shapes, drawings, and replicas of famous paintings — each one capturing the dreams and emotions of the weaver who made it.
Once removed from the loom, we manually clear any loose threads or imperfections with scissors and tweezers, inspecting each rug to make sure the weave is perfect. The fringe is sewn back into the body for a clean finish that's easier to care for.
At each end, we add a hand-braided cord — a distinctive, elegant touch that also protects the edges, so the rug holds up to daily life for generations.
